The Magic of Sundays at Windsor Mountain

The Magic of Sundays at Windsor Mountain

ImgMost of our children these days are so scheduled. Between school, homework, after-school sports, theatre or other activities, they are go, go, go. It’s great for children to be active with lots of enriching activities, and as parents, we love giving them time to recoup and relax every now and again too.

We keep campers busy at Windsor Mountain Summer Camp with their activities, free time, and play. And we also have moments of downtime to rest and recharge. We have a rest hour every day where campers can take an hour to relax and rest, maybe reading a book or writing a letter home (fingers crossed), and we also have a free-choice period every day at 5:00 where campers can choose their activity that day.

Then there are Sundays, which are a favorite at camp. A Sunday at Windsor Mountain has its own rhythm—more mellow, more full, and more meaningful from start to finish. The day begins with a slower start: a relaxed wake-up, extended clean-up, and then we gather for Sunday Morning Meeting, the heart of the day. Campers and staff walk to a special place—like the Amphitheater overlooking the lake or the Red Pine Forest—and settle into the moment. A thoughtful topic—such as empathy, home, or courage—is introduced, and then the space opens. Campers and counselors share reflections and stories, with quiet pauses in between to listen and reflect.

What unfolds is often extraordinary. Campers speak with honesty and bravery about their lives and experiences. Instead of clapping, the community responds with the ASL sign for applause – the silent finger waves of support. Some campers sit quietly soaking it all in. The meeting closes arm-in-arm with a song, leaving everyone feeling connected.

Here is how the rest of the day looks:

  • Sunday brunch – everyone’s favorite camp meal!
  • Sunday afternoon activity – a high-energy, all-camp activity. This might be the Olympics, a life-sized arcade activity, or International Day, celebrating our diverse cultures represented at camp.
  • Small Living Unit Night (SLUN) – Each bunk spends intentional time together, choosing activities like canoe trips, scavenger hunts, campfires, cooking, creative projects, or dance parties—building connection within their smaller community.Untitled Design ()

Sundays at Windsor Mountain are a beautiful reset for the busy camp days ahead. They offer space to slow down, connect deeply, and experience the spirit of camp at its very best.
