Hello Summer!

Hello Summer!

Your team at Windsor Mountain began planning for summer 2014 around 365 days ago, and through an excellent summer in 2013, a long, cold winter and wet spring, our collective moment finally has arrived.  Your children are once again imbuing camp with the energy that only children can muster, and camp is off to a great start.  Our first meeting together was excellent.  With lots of camper participation, we discussed the values of Windsor Mountain and what is special about our community.  Some of our thoughts included being kind to one another, having fun, making lots of new friends, trying new things, living in the moment, and being open to new things.  To be clear, these were not lofty directives dropped on the campers from on-high – these were all camper thoughts.  How excellent to be in a community of people all looking for the same basic goodness that people need to live happy, fulfilled and positive lives.

From our meeting, we broke up into our three living units (Cabins, Dorms, Tents) and had BBQs around camp (how better to welcome the summer).  To close out the night, we had a great campfire, including some old favorites (Charlie on the MTA, Wheat Kings, Iowa, something about bubble gum and worms, and Angel from Montgomery).  The final song of the night has become a camp anthem and one that speaks to us all – “I belong just here” written by our own Greg Whitney (Grego).

I know that some of you first-time camp families (and maybe returners too) might be feeling a little out of sorts tonight without your babies.  As a parent myself, I absolutely understand.  Rest assured though that they are in good hands tonight, in the care of lots of adults with oodles of camp experience, compassion and excellent judgment.  As I write this entry and prepare for tomorrow, I can hear the chatter on our radios of our leadership team running around camp making sure everyone has everything they need for a restful and peaceful night sleep in the serene woods of New Hampshire.  Sleep well yourselves, and tomorrow will be another great day.  Happy camping, and we are off to the races!
