Where the Purple Lilacs Grow
The state flower of NH is the Purple Lilac and the Purple Lilac song has been at WMI since the beginning. Back in the 60s and 70s we had a deaf program. So to this day, we continue the tradition of signing the lyrics in ASL while we sing.
Every arrival day, departure day, and plenty of days in between, we sing ‘Purple Lilacs’. It’s a little symbolic as I see it as the beginning of summer and it’s an easy song to learn and remember. Here are the lyrics:
I want to wake up in the morning where the purple lilacs grow
where the sun comes peeping into where I’m sleeping
and the song birds say hello, hello
I want to wander through the wild woods
where the fragrant breezes blow
and drift back to New Hampshire
where the purple lilacs grow
